Modern CVTs for non-car people aren’t bad compared to the original ones, those were rough!

You uh....you been in a Nissan with a CVT?
I’m aware Williams tested a CVT back in the 90s in an F1 car. The nissan CVT is a very far cry from that.

I have
while its no F1 transmission, its also no F1 car. Both are good for what they are though. I have had no issues at all with the CVT. The DCT in the focus on the other hand can eat my shit.

I drove a brand new altima a few months ago with one. It was both obvious it was a CVT, and was also worse than a normal transmission. I don’t know if it was programming or the mechanicals of it but even if the rest of the car was perfect (and admittedly, it was a nice place to sit for highway drives) that alone would ruin it. Glad yours is doing fine cons idering other brand’s minivans seem to have their own transmission issues (Honda/Chrysler vans hoo boy....)
Powershift has a different problem - no torque converter. So it lost all manner of smoothness that an automatic usually has and then blew itself up early and often due to the stress and programming nightmare it was. No defense of that transmission. Also not really a true automatic though.

i was actually surprised how well the transmission works in the van. its a big vehicle to be pulling around. the nature of a CVT takes a little getting used to especially under hard acceleration because it holds that RPM it sounds like the engine is going to explode but the shifting is always quick and smooth. We’re closing in on 100k miles with it too.

I actually prefer my 2014 pathfinder’s CVT to any automatic i have ever tried.
No elastic band feeling, just constant and smooth acceleration.

Which makes me wonder about the paddle shifter on the CVT Odyssey I looked at.
